For Australian tourists coming to Croatia, one of the biggest hurdles is staying connected to the internet. Unfortunately, for most visitors from Down Under, data roaming in Croatia is an expensive choice, since roaming packages offered by Australian telcos could be called many things but definitely not generous.
Optus
Optus offers their customers prepaid data packs priced at $45 and $85 AUD for 90 and 170 MB of roaming data respectively, this can hardly be called a deal at all. In today’s day and age, when a single YouTube video can easily suck up that entire allowance, it’s a far from a bargain.
Vodafone
Australia’s Vodafone seems to be the only one offering an affordable deal that can be used in Croatia, but it is available only to customers on a qualifying contract plan. For customers on an eligible plan, roaming in Croatia costs an extra $5 per day on top of your current plan cost. Prepaid and non-qualifying contract customers are stuck with the not-so-friendly $1 per MB “deal”.
Telstra
Much like Optus, Telstra offers a prepaid pack for mobile data and various roaming options. Standard data roaming is priced at $3 per MB, while a mobile broadband-only pack called “Travel data pack” will set you back between $30 and $300 depending on the prepaid data allowance chosen (150, 350, 700 or 1500 Mb).
Virgin Mobile Australia
Virgin doesn’t list data roaming prices in an easy to find place, and judging by the short overview of roaming costs in top 10 tourist destinations, they better not! Croatia is not listed, but UK data roaming is listed at a whopping $14.33 per MB which means users will pay approximately $535 AUD for watching 5 minutes of a 720p video on YouTube – talk about a bargain!
